Os Portugueses foram os primeiros a introduzir o bacalhau na alimentação, por altura das grandes navegações.

Era um alimento adequado às necessidades da época, como produto não perecível, que aguentava longas jornadas. Após diversas tentativas com os peixes da costa local os Portugueses, encontraram o bacalhau perto do Oceano Ártico. Tempos depois iniciaram a sua pesca na Terra nova (Canadá), descoberta em 1497.

Durável e acessível a uma parte da população que raramente podia comprar peixe fresco, seu sabor era mais agradável do que o de outros pescados salgados. O bacalhau foi rapidamente incorporado nos hábitos alimentares dos Portugueses e é até hoje uma de suas principais tradições gastronómicas.

Os Portugueses tornaram-se os maiores consumidores de bacalhau do mundo, por eles chamado, carinhosamente, de "fiel amigo".
The Portugueses were the first to introduce the codfish in the feeding, at the time of the great explorations.

Was a suitable food suited to the time's requirement, such as non-perishable product, that could handle long journeys. After several attempts with the fish of the local coastline, the Portugueses found the codfish near the Arctic Ocean. Later began their fishing in the New Earth (Canada), discovered in 1497.

Durable and affordable to a part of the population that could rarely buy fresh fish, its flavor was more enjoyable than the other salted fish. The cod was quickly incorporated into the eating habits of the Portugueses and is today one of its major gastronomic traditions.

The Portugueses became the largest consumers of codfish in the world, that they call,  affectionately, of "trusty friend".
